NSCAEM-2 Launched in Mysuru Targeting Highest Sickle Cell Cases
NSCAEM-2 Launched in Mysuru for Sickle Cell Disease

The second phase of the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM-2) was launched in Mysuru on 20 June 2026, targeting the district with the highest number of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) cases in India. The initiative aims to eliminate SCD as a public health problem by 2047.

Background and Scope of NSCAEM

NSCAEM 1.0, launched in 2023, focused on screening and diagnosis of vulnerable tribal populations in seven districts of Karnataka. The programme covered approximately 2.5 million people in its first phase. According to state health officials, Mysuru alone accounts for over 15,000 confirmed SCD cases, the highest among all districts in the country.

Expanded Focus of NSCAEM-2

The new phase extends screening to all age groups and non-tribal populations in high-burden districts. It includes comprehensive care such as hydroxyurea therapy, blood transfusion services, and genetic counselling. Dr. R. S. Patil, Director of the Karnataka State Sickle Cell Project, stated, "NSCAEM-2 will ensure that every diagnosed patient receives holistic management, reducing morbidity and mortality."

Implementation Strategy

The mission will be implemented through 250 primary health centres and 50 community health centres across Mysuru district. Mobile screening units will cover remote areas. A digital registry will track patients for lifelong follow-up. The government has allocated INR 120 crore for the first year of NSCAEM-2 in Karnataka.

Impact and Targets

Officials aim to screen 100% of the population in high-prevalence blocks by December 2027. The programme expects to reduce SCD-related deaths by 50% within five years. Community awareness campaigns will focus on early detection and prevention of complications.
