The annual Amarnath Yatra crossed a significant milestone on Sunday as the number of pilgrims who paid obeisance at the holy cave shrine in south Kashmir surpassed the four-lakh mark. According to official figures, over 4.14 lakh devotees have performed darshan since the yatra began on July 1.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha hailed the achievement, stating on X: "By Lord Shiva's divine grace, the holy Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra has crossed a remarkable milestone, and more than 4 lakh pilgrims have already completed the sacred journey. Till now, 4.14 lakh devotees have received darshan. I bow with reverence to Baba Amarnath for this blessing and extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this journey a truly divine experience for all."
Record-Breaking Pace
Crossing the 4-lakh mark in just 18 days sets the stage for a potential record-breaking yatra. The all-time high turnout was recorded in 2011 when 6.30 lakh pilgrims completed the journey. In comparison, the yatra in 2024 saw 5.12 lakh devotees. With the yatra continuing until August 28, the current pace suggests that this year could challenge the 2011 record.
The yatra is conducted along two routes: the shorter 14-kilometer Baltal route, which takes one day, and the longer 48-kilometer Pahalgam route, which takes three to four days. Both routes are equipped with medical facilities, rest stations, and free food services to support the pilgrims. The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) oversees the arrangements.
Security and Safety Measures
Given the location of the cave shrine in the sensitive Kashmir region, extensive security measures are in place. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has deployed additional forces along the routes, including paramilitary and police personnel. Helicopter services are also available for those who prefer a quicker journey. Health camps have been set up to address altitude-related issues.
The pilgrimage holds deep religious significance for Hindus. The cave, situated at an altitude of 3,888 meters (12,756 feet), contains a naturally formed ice stalagmite that is worshiped as a Shiva lingam. According to legend, Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality to Goddess Parvati in this cave.
Economic and Tourism Impact
The Amarnath Yatra provides a substantial boost to the local economy in Kashmir. Thousands of local residents are employed as porters, pony handlers, and in hospitality services during the yatra period. The influx of pilgrims also promotes tourism in the region. LG Sinha expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including the security forces, administration, and volunteers, for their efforts in making the yatra smooth and safe.
As of the 18th day, the yatra is progressing well with no major incidents reported. The registration process for pilgrims is being managed through online and offline counters. Devotees from across India and abroad are participating in the pilgrimage.
The cave shrine remains open for a limited period during the summer months, typically from July to August. The yatra is a test of endurance for many pilgrims, who trek through mountainous terrain and face low oxygen levels. Despite these challenges, the number of participants continues to grow each year. As of Sunday, the total number of pilgrims stood at 4,14,000, and the numbers are expected to rise steadily in the coming days, potentially setting a new record for the yatra.
