The Phone vs. Smile Dilemma
In his video, Sadhguru humorously enacted the common morning habit of searching for a phone, drawing applause from the audience. He emphasized that the phone should not be the first thing we engage with. Instead, he suggested, wake up and smile.
Why Smile Matters
“You do one thing. You get up in the morning and smile,” Sadhguru said. He then posed a key question: at whom do we smile? His answer was simple: “Nobody.” He challenged the notion that a smile requires an external trigger, explaining that a smile is not about someone else. It arises from within, from a feeling of joy or contentment.
Smiling is not a social gesture directed at others; it is a natural expression of inner peace. Sadhguru stressed that genuine joy should not depend on external circumstances or people. A smile happens when we feel good inside, not because someone appears before us.
How to Smile Alone
He advised, “Smile happens because something is happening within you, not because someone has come in front of you. So first thing in the morning, you smile. It takes 20 seconds, okay? If you can't smile at somebody who is next to you, just smile.” This practice, he believes, can transform mornings by fostering internal happiness without relying on others.
Sadhguru's message is clear: take 20 seconds each morning to smile, regardless of who is around. This simple act can shift focus from external validation to inner joy, setting a positive tone for the day ahead. By smiling first, we prioritize our own well-being over digital distractions.
