Every visit to Mumbai fills me with joy and nostalgia. India's financial capital has an infectious energy, courteous people, and a vibrant atmosphere. What stands out most is the civic discipline: Mumbaikars patiently queue at railway stations, bus terminals, and public places—a quality many cities could emulate.
Disappointment at Juhu Beach
My recent trip, however, brought disappointments. Juhu Beach, a top tourist attraction, was covered in plastic waste and garbage. A worker explained that much of the city's waste ends up in the sea and gets washed back ashore by tides. This is alarming. A beach visited by thousands daily deserves better care. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) must strengthen waste management to protect marine life and public health.
VIP Darshan at Siddhivinayak Temple
At the revered Siddhivinayak Temple, I witnessed a practice that disturbed me. After buying prasad, a shopkeeper advised me to use Gate No. 6 for faster darshan. A security official informed me that I could enter within five minutes by paying ₹500 at an authorized counter. This creates an unnecessary distinction among devotees. Faith should not be measured by ability to pay. Temples should ensure equal opportunity for all.
Bright Spots and Nostalgia
Fortunately, there were brighter moments. The Jio World Centre impressed me with its contemporary architecture, premium retail, and museum—a symbol of Mumbai's global aspirations. I also visited the iconic Sun-n-Sand Hotel, Mumbai's first five-star hotel. Once a symbol of old Bombay glamour, it now felt quiet and lacked its former charm. A large restaurant occupied the poolside area, and the property seemed almost deserted.
Mumbai remains one of my favourite cities for its resilience and energy. But environmental neglect and preferential treatment at places of worship need introspection. The City of Dreams must commit to cleanliness, equality, and civic values to truly inspire.
