Chennai Flight Chaos: West Asia Tensions Ground Over 14 Flights to Dubai, Doha
Chennai Flights Cancelled Amid Israel-Iran Tensions, Airspace Shut

Chennai Airport in Turmoil as West Asia Tensions Trigger Mass Flight Cancellations

Flight operations to and from West Asia destinations faced severe disruption on Saturday following a sudden escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran. This led to the cancellation of multiple flights from Chennai to key hubs such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, with the chaos expected to persist through Sunday.

At least 14 flights were affected, including five on Saturday and nine scheduled until 8 a.m. on Sunday, operated by various airlines. Uncertainty gripped passengers who had booked flights for later hours on Sunday, as the situation remained fluid and unpredictable.

Initial Disruptions and Airspace Restrictions

The first sign of trouble came when an Oman Air flight to Muscat, which departed from Chennai airport at 2:20 p.m. on Saturday, was forced to divert back due to newly imposed airspace restrictions in West Asia. This flight was subsequently cancelled, setting off a chain reaction of disruptions.

Soon after, Qatar Airways' Chennai-Abu Dhabi flight, scheduled for 4:10 p.m., was cancelled. This was followed by the cancellation of an Etihad Airways flight to Abu Dhabi from Chennai at 9:40 p.m. Additionally, an Emirates flight to Dubai, originally set for 9:45 p.m., was first postponed and then ultimately cancelled.

Indian Carriers Join the Cancellation Wave

Indian carriers were quick to respond to the escalating crisis. Air India cancelled its flight from Chennai to Dubai, which was scheduled for 6:45 p.m. on Saturday. The airline issued a statement advising passengers to check its official website for the latest updates, noting, "In view of the developing situation in parts of the Middle East, all Air India flights to all destinations in the Middle East are suspended."

Indigo also announced the cancellation of all its flights to West Asia and select other international routes until 6 p.m. on Sunday. The airline assured passengers that updates would be communicated promptly via registered contact details, aiming to mitigate confusion and inconvenience.

International Airlines and Operational Challenges

International airlines, including Oman Air, Air Arabia, Emirates, and Qatar Airways, advised passengers to stay informed through latest flight alerts. Sources revealed that Muscat's flight information region (FIR) imposed restrictions, only accepting flights that would exit into Jeddah's FIR, not Emirates'. This led to significant congestion, with many flights from India being forced to return from Muscat FIR.

The cancellations at Chennai airport on Sunday included a wide range of services:

  • Indigo's flights to Doha at 3:40 a.m. and Dubai at 6:20 a.m.
  • Air Arabia's flights to Sharjah at 3:45 a.m. and Abu Dhabi at 4:50 a.m.
  • Etihad's flight to Dubai at 3:55 a.m.
  • Emirates' flight to Dubai at 3:50 a.m.
  • Qatar Airways' flight to Doha at 4:05 a.m.
  • Gulf Air's flight to Bahrain at 5:35 a.m.
  • Oman Air's flight to Muscat at 7:20 a.m.

Three flights scheduled to arrive from Bahrain, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi between 8 p.m. and 8:40 p.m. were also cancelled, further compounding the travel woes for passengers.

Broader Impact and Passenger Advisory

The disruptions highlight the immediate impact of geopolitical tensions on global aviation. Passengers are urged to monitor airline communications closely and expect potential delays or cancellations as the situation in West Asia continues to evolve. Airlines have emphasized the importance of checking official channels for real-time updates to avoid unnecessary travel hassles.
