Chennai Metro Phase-2 Moves Closer to Launch with Safety Inspection
The first operational segment of Chennai Metro's Phase-2, spanning nearly 15 kilometers from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani, has taken a significant step toward passenger operations. On Wednesday, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) initiated a comprehensive inspection of this elevated corridor, bringing the line closer to its anticipated commissioning by the end of February 2024.
Detailed Inspection of Key Infrastructure
Anant Madhukar Chowdhary, CMRS for the Southern Circle based in Bengaluru, led the inspection team, which included three deputy CMRS officials. The initial phase focused on the 6.13-kilometer stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Iyyappanthangal, covering seven stations. During this process, the team meticulously examined critical systems such as electrical installations, track work, and civil structures to ensure compliance with safety standards.
The inspection is scheduled to continue on Thursday, with the team set to assess the remaining section between Iyyappanthangal and Vadapalani. In total, the CMRS will review 11 stations along the 15-kilometer alignment, which ultimately features 17 stations, including four double-decker stations designed as interchanges between Corridor-4 and Corridor-5. A senior official clarified that while the double-decker section is part of the inspection, the current certification process specifically pertains to operations on Corridor-4.
Progress and Timeline for Phase-2
Officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) have confirmed that trial runs are ongoing along this corridor, but clearance from the CMRS is mandatory before the line can be officially commissioned. The broader Phase-2 network encompasses 116.1 kilometers across three corridors, with final sections projected for completion by December 2028.
Simultaneously, finishing work is advancing at key stations such as Vadapalani and Saligramam, where entry and exit structures are being finalized. As part of road restoration efforts, medians along the center of roads have been installed and painted, enhancing urban infrastructure and safety for commuters.
This development marks a crucial milestone in Chennai's public transportation expansion, aiming to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the metropolitan area.
