Apple has increased the prices of its MacBook and iPad lineup in India by up to 20%, joining a growing list of tech companies affected by the ongoing global semiconductor shortage. The price revision, effective immediately, impacts popular models including the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and iPad Air.
Price Hike Details
The MacBook Air with M1 chip now starts at ₹99,900, up from ₹92,900, marking a 7.5% increase. The 13-inch MacBook Pro sees a similar rise, now priced at ₹1,29,900 compared to ₹1,22,900. The iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2021) has jumped by nearly 20%, from ₹99,900 to ₹1,19,900. The iPad Air (4th gen) is now ₹59,900, up from ₹54,900.
According to Apple's India website, the price adjustments reflect changes in component costs, particularly the shortage of chips that has plagued global supply chains. The company had previously absorbed some costs but now passes them to consumers.
Xbox Consoles Also Costlier
Microsoft has also raised prices for Xbox Series X and S consoles in India. The Xbox Series X now costs ₹55,990, up from ₹49,990, a 12% increase. The Xbox Series S is priced at ₹39,990, up from ₹35,990. In a statement, Microsoft cited "market conditions" and the chip shortage as key factors.
Industry analysts note that the chip crisis, exacerbated by pandemic-induced demand and geopolitical tensions, shows no signs of easing. "We expect price hikes to continue across consumer electronics through 2022," said Ritesh Patel, a senior analyst at TechInsights.
Impact on Consumers
For Indian consumers, these price hikes come at a time when inflation is already high. Many are reconsidering purchases or opting for older models. "I was planning to buy a MacBook Air, but now I'll wait for a sale or look at alternatives," said Mumbai-based student Ananya Sharma.
Apple and Microsoft have not announced any immediate plans to reduce prices. The chip shortage is expected to persist until at least mid-2023, according to industry forecasts.
