Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to visit India following an invitation from National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. He will participate in the 16th meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors and High Representatives, scheduled for June 22-23. The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed the visit on Thursday, noting that Wang Yi, who serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, will attend the meeting in India.
Background of the Visit
Wang Yi previously visited New Delhi last year for the 24th Meeting of the Special Representatives, where he held talks with NSA Doval. During that meeting, both sides acknowledged that peace and tranquility have been maintained in the India-China border areas since the 23rd Special Representatives Talks. They emphasized the importance of preserving border stability to foster overall bilateral relations.
Thaw in Bilateral Ties
The upcoming visit is part of a broader thaw in relations between New Delhi and Beijing. This follows several meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of major international summits, including the SCO Summit in Tianjin last year. Both leaders welcomed the positive momentum and steady progress in bilateral relations since their last meeting in Kazan in October 2024.
They reaffirmed that India and China are development partners, not rivals, and stressed that differences should not escalate into disputes. The Ministry of External Affairs noted in a statement that a stable relationship and cooperation between the two countries, based on mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity, are essential for the growth and development of their 2.8 billion people, as well as for a multipolar world and a multi-polar Asia that aligns with 21st-century trends.
Details of the BRICS NSA Meeting
The 16th BRICS National Security Advisors meeting will bring together senior security officials from member nations to discuss regional and global security challenges. The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced the event on social media platform X, confirming Wang Yi's participation at the invitation of NSA Ajit Doval.
This engagement marks another step in the ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties between India and China, with both sides expressing commitment to maintaining peace and stability in border areas and promoting overall bilateral relations.
