Delhi Metro's Magenta Line to Become Longest Corridor in NCR with Most Interchanges and Underground Stations
The Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro network is poised to transform into the longest corridor in the National Capital Region (NCR), featuring the highest number of interchange and underground stations. This significant development follows the approval of Phase V(A) on December 24, 2025, which includes an extension from Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha via Central Vista.
Magenta Line Extension Details
According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the Indraprastha-Inderlok corridor from Phase IV will now be integrated as an extension of the Magenta Line. Once completed, the line will stretch from Botanical Garden to Inderlok, covering approximately 89 kilometers. This expansion will establish the Magenta Line as the longest corridor within the Delhi Metro network, surpassing all other lines in length and connectivity.
Driverless Operation and Station Count
In an official statement, the DMRC confirmed that the Magenta Line will operate entirely as a driverless metro corridor once fully functional. Upon completion, the line will boast a total of 65 stations, with 40 of these being underground stations. This underground emphasis enhances urban aesthetics and reduces surface-level disruptions.
Interchange Stations Expansion
Currently, the operational stretch of the Magenta Line includes four interchange stations: Kalkaji Mandir, Botanical Garden, Janakpuri West, and Hauz Khas. Post-extension, this number will dramatically increase to 21 interchange stations, providing unprecedented connectivity across Delhi. Key highlights include:
- Four Triple Interchange Stations: Central Secretariat, Azadpur, New Delhi, and Inderlok.
- Seventeen Double Interchange Stations: Such as Kalindi Kunj, Chirag Delhi, Terminal-1 IGI Airport, and Peeragarhi.
The DMRC emphasized that these extensive interchange facilities are expected to significantly reduce travel times, decongest major corridors, and offer seamless, end-to-end connectivity throughout the city.
Impact on NCR Connectivity
The transformation of the Magenta Line into the NCR's longest corridor marks a milestone in urban transportation. By integrating multiple phases and enhancing interchange options, the DMRC aims to streamline commuter routes and support the growing infrastructure demands of the National Capital Region. This project underscores a commitment to advanced, efficient public transit solutions.
