Fatal Collision on Ramgarh Highway Leaves 7 Dead
A tragic road accident on the Ramgarh highway in Jharkhand claimed seven lives and left 15 others injured on June 26, 2026. The collision occurred near Barkakana when a truck rammed into a passenger vehicle, according to local police officials.
Details of the Incident
The accident took place in the early hours of the morning. The passenger vehicle, carrying around 20 people, was traveling from Ramgarh to a nearby town when the truck, reportedly speeding, lost control and hit it head-on. The impact was severe, causing the passenger vehicle to overturn.
Police and rescue teams reached the spot soon after the incident. The injured were rushed to the nearest hospital in Ramgarh, where doctors confirmed that five people died on the spot, while two succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
Victims and Rescue Operations
The deceased included four men and three women, all residents of the region. The injured are being treated at Ramgarh Sadar Hospital, with three in critical condition. District administration officials visited the hospital and assured all necessary medical assistance.
“The truck driver fled the scene after the accident. We have launched a search operation to nab him,” said a local police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity. The truck has been seized for investigation.
Road Safety Concerns in Jharkhand
This accident highlights the persistent issue of road safety in Jharkhand, where accidents on highways are common due to overspeeding and poor road conditions. According to the state transport department, over 2,000 road accidents were reported in the state in 2025, resulting in more than 800 deaths.
Local residents have demanded stricter enforcement of traffic rules and better road infrastructure. “The highway is notorious for accidents. We need speed breakers and better lighting,” said a local shopkeeper who witnessed the aftermath.
Government Response and Compensation
Jharkhand Chief Minister expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each. The injured will receive Rs 50,000 for treatment. The state government has also ordered a probe into the incident.
“We are committed to improving road safety. Strict action will be taken against those responsible for this tragedy,” the Chief Minister said in a statement.
