East Central Railway Fortifies Security for Massive Holi Passenger Influx in Bihar
In preparation for the substantial surge in passenger traffic expected during the Holi festival, the East Central Railway (ECR) has conducted a comprehensive review and significantly bolstered its security protocols. The primary objective is to guarantee the safety and seamless travel experience for all commuters navigating the railway network across Bihar, which falls under ECR's jurisdiction.
Anticipating a Massive Passenger Surge
The festive period is projected to witness an extraordinary influx, with estimates suggesting an additional 15 to 20 lakh passengers will utilize railway services in Bihar. This anticipated volume has prompted the ECR to implement a multi-layered security strategy to manage the heightened demand and associated challenges effectively.
Strategic Crowd Management and Enhanced Vigilance
According to Amaresh Kumar, ECR's Principal Chief Security Commissioner-cum-IG of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), the RPF has been entrusted with critical crowd control duties, especially at major hubs like Patna Junction. To regulate passenger flow and prevent dangerous overcrowding, the RPF is establishing designated holding areas at key stations.
Collaborative security efforts will see the RPF working in close coordination with the Government Railway Police (GRP) to provide uninterrupted, round-the-clock security at identified vulnerable locations. Furthermore, both forces will jointly escort all passenger trains traversing high-risk zones, ensuring a rapid and coordinated response to any emergencies that may arise.
Focus on Critical Station Areas and Specialized Teams
Special attention will be directed toward critical points within station premises that are prone to congestion. RPF personnel will maintain a constant and vigilant presence at:
- Ticket booking counters
- Waiting halls and cloak rooms
- Circulating areas and concourses
To proactively combat security threats, random frisking will be conducted at these high-traffic points. The railway administration has also deployed specialized units to enhance responsiveness:
- Quick Response Teams (QRTs): Positioned to act swiftly in the event of unforeseen incidents or emergencies.
- Anti-Sabotage Teams: Assigned to meticulously inspect empty train rakes in yards to eliminate any hidden threats.
- Plain Clothes Surveillance: Teams from the RPF's Special Investigation Branch (SIB) and Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) will be stationed discreetly within crowds to deter and detect pilferage and pickpocketing, common issues during festive rushes.
Prioritizing Women's Safety and Combating Exploitation
Ensuring the safety of women passengers remains a paramount concern for the authorities. To this end, RPF assistance booths will operate 24/7, providing immediate support and aid to women traveling alone. Additionally, railway authorities will maintain a high state of alert to prevent touts from exploiting passengers amid the festival rush, safeguarding travelers from fraudulent activities.
The East Central Railway's proactive and comprehensive security overhaul aims to create a secure, orderly, and efficient travel environment for the millions celebrating Holi, ensuring the festive spirit is matched by a commitment to passenger welfare and safety.
