India Reaffirms Energy Security and Citizen Protection Amid Middle East Crisis
As the Middle East conflict intensifies, India has underscored its unwavering focus on securing energy supplies and safeguarding its citizens. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, addressing the Rajya Sabha on Monday, declared that national interest, particularly energy security, remains the top priority for the government.
Jaishankar's Statement on Energy and Regional Stability
In a suo moto statement, Jaishankar highlighted the critical importance of the Middle East region, stating, "The region is key to our energy security and includes many important suppliers of oil and gas." He warned that serious supply chain disruptions and a climate of instability pose significant challenges. Emphasizing India's stance, he added, "The well-being and security of the Indian community is our priority. Our national interest, including energy security, will always be paramount."
Jaishankar advocated for peace and a return to dialogue and diplomacy, calling for de-escalation, restraint, and ensuring the safety of civilians. He noted that the recent spike in energy prices, triggered by the Iran-Israel conflict, has prompted the government to maintain a sharp focus on managing availability, costs, and market risks.
Government's Commitment to Energy Market Management
Detailing India's approach, Jaishankar said, "In view of the implications of this conflict for our energy security, the government remains committed to ensuring that it takes into account the availability, cost and risks of the energy markets." He stressed that the interest of the Indian consumer is and will always be the overriding priority. Furthermore, he revealed that Indian diplomacy has actively supported the endeavors of energy enterprises in this volatile situation.
Earlier Warnings and Diplomatic Efforts
Recalling earlier actions, Jaishankar noted that the government had expressed deep concerns on February 20, urging all sides to exercise restraint. He confirmed that India formally reiterated these concerns on February 28, 2026, as the geopolitical situation deteriorated, with the conflict now affecting neighboring nations. Jaishankar reiterated India's belief that dialogue and diplomacy are the ways forward for all sides to de-escalate tensions.
Opposition Calls for Debate
Meanwhile, opposition Members of Parliament urged for a full debate under Rule 176, calling for discussions on both energy security and the safety of Indian citizens in the region. This highlights the broader political consensus on addressing these critical issues amid the ongoing crisis.
The escalating conflict, which includes reports of Iran firing missiles at Israel under new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and regional developments such as new safety laws in Dubai, underscores the urgency of India's proactive stance.
