According to the Indian Army's Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI), the talks were conducted between senior officials, including G Balasubramanian and Upendra Dwivedi. The primary objective was to assess the regional security environment and explore concrete measures to fortify defence and diplomatic relations.
The discussions centered on strengthening bilateral cooperation and evaluating security developments in the Indian Ocean region, where both countries maintain a close and strategic engagement. This meeting is part of ongoing diplomatic and defence interactions aimed at reinforcing the long-standing partnership between India and the Maldives.
Natural Partners with Historical Ties
Earlier, Maldives Minister of State for Tourism and Environment, Muaviyath Mohamed, emphasized the deep-rooted relationship between the two nations. He described India and the Maldives as natural partners, highlighting their proximity and historical bonds.
"India and the Maldives have had very good relations from the very beginning. The fact of the matter is, we are the closest neighbours. That fact will remain as it is. We are working in a very close manner, respecting each other and collaborating for the benefit of both countries," Mohamed stated.
He noted that both countries are collaborating on multiple fronts, including:
- Sustainable development initiatives
- Market reforms and economic cooperation
- Addressing broader global challenges
Mohamed also praised India as a reliable partner in environmental efforts, particularly in areas such as technology sharing, knowledge transfer, and capacity building, with cooperation intensifying in recent years.
Expanding Naval and Maritime Cooperation
Naval cooperation between India and the Maldives has seen continued expansion. Earlier this month, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti met with Maldives Coast Guard Commandant Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem to discuss maritime cooperation and regional security.
The Indian Navy highlighted that this interaction underscored the importance of the Indian Ocean region and reaffirmed the strong maritime partnership between the two countries. Continued engagements, including during Exercise MILAN 2026, have further reinforced cooperation and interoperability at sea.
These developments reflect a comprehensive approach to bilateral relations, encompassing defence, diplomacy, environmental collaboration, and maritime security. The ongoing dialogues signify a mutual commitment to maintaining stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region through strengthened strategic ties.
