Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the prominent Kashmiri religious and political leader, has called on India and Pakistan to return to the negotiating table to resolve their long-standing disputes. Speaking on recent geopolitical developments, he asserted that dialogue remains the only viable path to peace in the region.
Mirwaiz Cites US-Iran Talks as Example
Drawing a parallel with international diplomacy, Mirwaiz pointed out that if the United States and Iran—two nations with deep-seated animosity—can come to the negotiating table after periods of escalation, then India and Pakistan can also sit together and talk to resolve their issues. He emphasized that both countries have historically benefited from dialogue and should not shy away from resuming it.
Call for De-escalation in Kashmir
The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Kashmir region, where cross-border firing and political unrest have persisted. Mirwaiz, who leads the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, has consistently advocated for peaceful resolution of the Kashmir conflict through bilateral talks. He urged both governments to prioritize the welfare of the people over political posturing.
Historical Context of India-Pakistan Talks
India and Pakistan have engaged in several rounds of peace talks over the decades, including the Shimla Agreement (1972) and the Lahore Declaration (1999). However, talks have often stalled due to issues such as terrorism, the status of Kashmir, and mutual distrust. The last formal bilateral dialogue was suspended in 2019 following the Pulwama attack and India's subsequent revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mirwaiz also called on the international community, particularly the United Nations and major powers like the United States, to facilitate a conducive environment for dialogue. He stressed that lasting peace in South Asia is crucial for global stability.
According to Mirwaiz, the people of Kashmir have suffered the most due to the lack of dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. He urged both countries to show statesmanship and take bold steps toward reconciliation.
