Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a three-day official visit to India, marking the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit. She was received at the airport by Indian officials and waved to the gathered media before departing for her engagements.
Bilateral talks to cover wide-ranging issues
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Takaichi are scheduled to hold bilateral talks on Thursday, during which the two leaders are expected to review the entire spectrum of India-Japan relations. Discussions will focus on deepening cooperation in emerging technologies, economic security, defence, space, resilient supply chains, and clean energy. The summit aims to chart a course for the future of the strategic partnership.
Japan's significant economic footprint in India
Takaichi's visit assumes significance as Japan is one of India's largest foreign investors. Nearly 1,400 Japanese companies currently operate in India, contributing to the country's economic growth. Bilateral trade between the two nations stood at $27.5 billion in the fiscal year 2025-26. Japan has made substantial investments across sectors such as infrastructure, manufacturing, finance, and clean energy, underscoring the strength of the strategic partnership.
Strategic timing amid Quad commitments
The timing of the visit is notable as it comes barely a month after the Quad foreign ministers' meeting, where India, Japan, Australia, and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific. The summit is expected to further align India and Japan's positions on regional security and economic cooperation.
Review of existing partnerships and future roadmap
During the summit, the two sides are expected to review the entire spectrum of bilateral ties, including ongoing projects such as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor and Japan's contributions to India's northeastern region development. New initiatives in defence technology, space exploration, and supply chain resilience are also anticipated to be announced.
