The Government of India has appointed senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved his appointment on Wednesday, June 25, 2026, for a tenure of two years, effective from the date he assumes charge. Dixit, a 1992-batch IPS officer of the Uttarakhand cadre, will succeed Tapan Deka, whose term as IB Director ended on June 30.
Who is Mahesh Dixit?
Mahesh Dixit is a seasoned intelligence and security professional with over three decades of experience. He has served in various key positions within the Intelligence Bureau and other central security agencies. Before this appointment, Dixit was serving as the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau, overseeing counter-terrorism and internal security operations. According to official sources, Dixit has extensive experience in handling cross-border terrorism, left-wing extremism, and cyber threats.
Dixit began his career in the Indian Police Service in 1992 and has held several important posts in his home cadre of Uttarakhand and at the Centre. He has also served as the Inspector General of Police in the Border Security Force (BSF) and has been instrumental in strengthening intelligence gathering mechanisms along the borders.
Key Challenges Ahead
As the new IB chief, Dixit will face several critical challenges, including rising cyber threats, cross-border terrorism from Pakistan-based groups, and internal security issues in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. According to intelligence analysts, the new director is expected to focus on modernizing the agency's surveillance capabilities and enhancing coordination with state police forces.
“The appointment of Mahesh Dixit comes at a time when the country is facing complex security threats. His experience in counter-intelligence and internal security will be crucial,” said a senior Home Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Reaction and Background
The appointment has been welcomed by security experts and former officials. Former IB Director R.K. Bhatt said, “Dixit is a thorough professional with a deep understanding of the intelligence landscape. His leadership will ensure continuity and strength in the IB's operations.”
Dixit holds a postgraduate degree in political science and has undergone advanced training in intelligence analysis and security management. He is known for his low-profile approach and meticulous planning. His tenure is expected to focus on leveraging technology for real-time intelligence sharing and countering disinformation campaigns.
The Intelligence Bureau is India's premier domestic intelligence agency, responsible for internal security and counter-intelligence. The change in command comes as the agency prepares to enhance its role in combating emerging threats like drone attacks, cyber espionage, and radicalization.
