Mahesh Dixit Appointed New Intelligence Bureau Chief, Replaces Tapan Deka
Mahesh Dixit to Replace Tapan Deka as IB Chief

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has cleared the appointment of Mahesh Dixit, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, as the new chief of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). He will replace Himachal Pradesh cadre officer Tapan Deka, who has been serving as IB director since 2022 and whose extended term ends on June 30.

Mahesh Dixit currently serves as Special Director in the IB. He has extensive experience in Jammu and Kashmir, having served as chief of the IB's Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Srinagar. He also oversaw the Leh region.

Dixit's Role in Jammu and Kashmir

Dixit contributed significantly to maintaining peace and law and order following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. His deep understanding of the region's security dynamics has been instrumental in counter-insurgency operations and intelligence gathering.

According to official sources, the government considered his vast experience in handling internal security challenges, particularly in sensitive areas like Jammu and Kashmir, before approving his appointment.

Background of Tapan Deka

Tapan Deka, a 1992-batch Himachal Pradesh cadre IPS officer, was appointed IB director in 2022. His tenure saw several high-profile security operations and counter-terrorism successes. The government had extended his term beyond the usual two-year period, but it will now conclude on June 30.

Deka's leadership was marked by enhanced coordination between state and central intelligence agencies. The transition to Dixit is expected to be smooth, given the latter's seniority and experience within the IB.

Appointments Committee Approval

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister, approved Dixit's appointment. This decision underscores the government's emphasis on continuity in leadership for critical security posts. Dixit is expected to assume charge on July 1.

His appointment comes at a time when the IB faces challenges related to cross-border terrorism, cyber threats, and internal security. Dixit's expertise in handling complex situations is viewed as an asset.
