Indian Navy Prepares for Landmark International Fleet Review and MILAN Exercise in Visakhapatnam
The Indian Navy is poised to mark a pivotal chapter in India's maritime history as Visakhapatnam, often called the 'City of Destiny,' will serve as the host for both the International Fleet Review (IFR) and Exercise MILAN from February 15 to 25. This dual event firmly positions Visakhapatnam at the core of India's strategic Indo-Pacific initiatives, underscoring the nation's growing naval influence and diplomatic outreach.
Expanded Scope and Global Participation
According to a Navy source, the current edition of the IFR and MILAN exercise will be significantly larger in scope and richer in strategic meaning. Navies from 72 countries, including major powers like the United States and Russia, are set to participate, making it one of the most comprehensive naval gatherings in recent years. The mega joint naval events will feature an impressive array of over 60 warships and naval aircraft from three countries, highlighting the scale of international cooperation and military readiness.
The IFR is designed to position India's eastern seaboard as a central hub for naval diplomacy and multilateral maritime engagement. This initiative builds on India's longstanding tradition of using IFRs and opening its ports to allied navies since 2001, effectively projecting maritime strength and fostering global partnerships.
First-Time Participants and Key Assets
Adding to the event's significance, warships and assets from Germany, the Philippines, and the United Arab Emirates will participate for the first time. Notable vessels include the Philippines' 'BRP Miguel Malvar' (FFG-06) and a UAE Navy warship, Al Emarat. Their involvement reflects the broadening of India's naval alliances and the increasing importance of collaborative security efforts in the Indo-Pacific region.
INS Vikrant: The Star Attraction
The aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, which played a crucial role in Operation Sindoor's naval leg, is set to be the centerpiece of the fleet review. Recently deployed in the northern Arabian Sea, the Vikrant carrier battle group executed a strategy of compellence, effectively forcing the Pakistan Navy into a defensive posture. Its presence at the IFR will not only showcase India's advanced naval capabilities but also symbolize the nation's commitment to maintaining regional stability and security.
This event represents a significant milestone in India's maritime strategy, blending military prowess with diplomatic finesse to strengthen ties across the globe.
