Prime Minister Modi Virtually Inaugurates Modernized Pollachi Railway Junction

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the extensively renovated Pollachi railway junction through a videoconferencing link from Madurai. The railway junction, which serves as a crucial transportation hub in the Coimbatore region, has been comprehensively upgraded under the central government's Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at a substantial cost of Rs 13.93 crore.

Ceremony and Key Attendees

A formal function was organized at the railway junction to mark the inauguration ceremony. The event was attended by several dignitaries including Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, Pollachi MLA V Jayaraman, Palakkad Railway Division Manager Madhukar Roat, and senior officials from Southern Railway. The presence of these officials underscored the significance of the infrastructure project for regional connectivity.

Substantial Demands for Enhanced Rail Services

During the ceremony, Pollachi MLA V Jayaraman submitted a detailed memorandum to Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, outlining critical improvements needed for the local rail network. His key demands included:

  • Establishment of a dedicated goods shed at Koolanayakkanpatti to support the local coconut and coir industries, boosting economic activity.

Simultaneously, representatives from the Divisional Railway Users' Consultative Committee and the Pollachi Rail Passengers Welfare Association presented their own set of demands for improved services. Their requests focused on expanding connectivity and restoring previous services:

  1. Extension of the Bengaluru-Coimbatore Uday Double Decker and Ernakulam-Palakkad MEMU services up to Pollachi with an additional stop at Anaimalai Road.
  2. Reintroduction of the erstwhile Coimbatore-Rameswaram service as an Erode-Rameswaram night train via Pollachi.
  3. Introduction of a daily night train service to Tambaram originating from either Coimbatore or Pollachi.
  4. Restoration of the Kovilpalayam station to reactivate local rail access.
  5. Launch of special train services on key routes including Mettupalayam-Tirunelveli, Podanur/Coimbatore-Tambaram, and Coimbatore–Dindigul corridors.

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu received these petitions and assured the gathering that sincere efforts would be made to address the demands, acknowledging the importance of these improvements for passenger convenience and regional development.

Comprehensive Modernization Under Amrit Bharat Scheme

Pollachi railway junction, classified as an NSG-5 category station under the Palakkad division of Southern Railway, has undergone a thorough transformation aimed at significantly enhancing passenger amenities, accessibility, and overall infrastructure quality.   • Upgradation of the foot over-bridge and subway for safer crossing.
  • Enhanced signage throughout the station for better wayfinding.
