PM Modi and Iran President Discuss Regional Stability and Navigation Rights
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, during which the Iranian leader briefed Modi on recent developments in West Asia and the way forward. The Prime Minister reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for India and the world, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
Modi welcomed the understanding reached between the parties and reiterated India's consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He stressed the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, and for safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce.
India's Stance on Dialogue and Diplomacy
During the call, President Pezeshkian briefed Prime Minister Modi on the recent developments in West Asia and the way forward. The PMO statement highlighted that Modi reiterated India's consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait for India and the world.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote: "Spoke with the President of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, on the recent developments in West Asia. Welcomed the progress made in the negotiations and expressed hope that continued efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region. Reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait for India and the World."
Invitation to Burial Ceremonies of Late Supreme Leader
Earlier, Iranian President Pezeshkian had invited Prime Minister Modi to the burial ceremonies for Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, scheduled to be held next week. According to reports, the Indian government is planning to send Bihar Governor Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita as representatives to the ceremonies, which will take place from July 5 to 9.
