India and US Accelerate Trade Talks
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have instructed their officials to finalise a trade agreement swiftly. Speaking at a press briefing, Misri noted that significant progress has been achieved towards concluding an interim trade pact between the two nations.
Progress on Interim Trade Pact
Misri highlighted that the leaders' directive comes after productive discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral economic ties. The interim trade pact is expected to cover key areas such as tariffs, market access, and investment facilitation. Both sides are working to resolve outstanding issues and ensure a mutually beneficial outcome.
The announcement follows a series of high-level meetings between Indian and American trade representatives. Misri expressed optimism that the pact would be finalised in the coming weeks, boosting trade and investment flows. He added that the agreement would lay the groundwork for a comprehensive trade deal in the future.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The development underscores the commitment of both countries to deepen their strategic partnership. PM Modi and President Trump have consistently emphasised the importance of trade as a pillar of the bilateral relationship. The swift finalisation of the pact is expected to enhance economic cooperation and create new opportunities for businesses and workers in both nations.
Misri confirmed that officials from both sides will continue negotiations to iron out technical details. The interim pact is seen as a stepping stone towards a broader trade framework that addresses long-term economic goals.
