Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced on June 23, 2026, that Rajasthan will receive its due share of Yamuna water under the 1994 Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) Agreement, with a Memorandum of Understanding to be signed on June 29. The decision followed a meeting at the New Delhi residence of Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, attended by Saini, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, and senior officials from both states.
Meeting Details and Consensus
The meeting focused on water resources, irrigation, and drinking water issues concerning Haryana and Rajasthan. Detailed discussions were held on supplying Rajasthan's allocated water share under the 1994 UYRB Agreement. It was decided that Rajasthan would receive its share through a pipeline, in line with the agreement. The MoU will be formalized on June 29, 2026.
Official Statements
CM Saini stated, "Haryana respects Rajasthan’s right to receive water under the agreement and will ensure the supply of its allocated share." He emphasized that better management of water resources through coordination and cooperation among states benefits all regions. Rajasthan CM Bhajanlal Sharma said, "Rajasthan is only seeking the quantity of water allocated to it under the agreement." He added that effectively utilizing surplus monsoon river water for Rajasthan could provide a permanent solution to the drinking water crisis in a large part of the state.
Key Infrastructure Projects Discussed
Saini highlighted the importance of the Renuka, Kishau, and Lakhwar Dam Projects for North Indian states, stating that efforts would be accelerated for their implementation. These projects are expected to meet future water requirements, enhance irrigation capacity, and improve drinking water availability. He assured enhanced coordination among concerned states and expeditious completion of necessary procedures.
Ghaggar River Pollution Issue
The Chief Minister also raised the issue of polluted water flowing into the Ghaggar River. He proposed establishing separate treatment plants to treat water entering the Ghaggar canal, ensuring untreated wastewater does not flow into the river. This would help maintain cleanliness of water sources and protect the environment.
Union Minister's Directives
Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil directed officials to take prompt action on relevant matters and stressed that better coordination among states is essential for proper utilization and conservation of water resources. The meeting also included extensive discussions on water management, river conservation, and inter-state cooperation.
