Silchar MP Urges Railway Minister for Comprehensive Barak Valley Infrastructure Package
In a significant push for regional development, Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya has formally urged Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to expedite a comprehensive package of railway infrastructure upgrades for Barak Valley. The appeal, made on Tuesday, emphasizes the region's critical strategic role as southern Assam's primary rail gateway to the neighboring states of Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur.
Key Demands for Enhanced Rail Connectivity
In a detailed memorandum submitted to Minister Vaishnaw, Suklabaidya outlined several specific demands aimed at transforming the region's rail network. The MP called for the immediate restoration of the Silchar–Naharlagun train service, which has been a longstanding demand of local commuters. Furthermore, he advocated for the introduction of a prestigious Silchar–Delhi Rajdhani Express to provide direct high-speed connectivity to the national capital.
To improve local accessibility, Suklabaidya requested additional stoppages at Salchapra and Chandranathpur stations for select long-distance trains. This move is expected to benefit numerous communities along these routes by integrating them more effectively into the national rail grid.
Strategic and Economic Imperatives
"The Barak Valley holds immense strategic and economic importance for the entire northeastern region," Suklabaidya asserted in his memorandum. "Strengthening railway infrastructure here will not only spur local economic growth but also reinforce national integration by improving connectivity with neighboring states."
One of the most significant proposals is the establishment of a dedicated railway division headquarters in either Silchar or Badarpur. The MP argued that administering southern Assam, along with Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur, from the existing Lumding division is no longer sustainable or efficient given the geographical and logistical challenges.
Modernization of Rolling Stock and Operations
The memorandum also includes several technical upgrades aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency. Suklabaidya sought the replacement of the older ICF coaches with modern LHB rakes for the crucial Silchar–Guwahati lifeline service, accompanied by dedicated power cars to ensure reliable operations.
To optimize terminal operations at Silchar, the MP recommended converting several local passenger services into DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) operations. This would significantly reduce turnaround times and improve service frequency. The specific routes identified for this upgrade include:
- Silchar–Bairabi
- Silchar–Dharmanagar
- Silchar–Mahisason
- Silchar–Dullabcherra
These proposed changes are designed to create a more robust, efficient, and modern railway network that can support the growing economic and strategic needs of Barak Valley and its surrounding regions.
