UK Cabinet ministers will reportedly tell Prime Minister Keir Starmer this afternoon that he must set out a clear timeline for his departure, according to The Times. The newspaper reports that “multiple” Cabinet members plan to inform him that his “time is up”, increasing pressure on his leadership.
Mounting Pressure on Starmer
This came amid mounting pressure on Starmer after Labour’s Andy Burnham secured a parliamentary seat in a special election and signalled he is prepared to challenge for the party leadership.
Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, won the Makerfield constituency in north-west England with a clear majority over Reform UK’s Rob Kenyon, taking nearly 55% of the vote. In his victory speech, he said the result offered Britain a chance “to turn the tide” and described it as a potential turning point for national politics.
Burnham's Call for Change
The 56-year-old, often dubbed the “King of the North”, used his address to call for a “new path for Britain” and criticised what he described as a broken political system. His win strengthens speculation that he could mount a leadership challenge against Starmer, who insists he will not resign and will contest any contest.
Burnham is expected to take his seat in Parliament next week as tensions within the Labour Party continue to grow.
