Union Minister Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Ata Hasnain have been designated to represent India at the burial ceremonies of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The event follows an invitation extended by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Indian Delegation to Attend Final Rites
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Monday that Margherita, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, and Governor Hasnain will travel to Iran to participate in the state funeral. The delegation is expected to convey India's condolences and solidarity with the Iranian people during this period of mourning.
President Pezeshkian had personally called PM Modi last week to invite India to the ceremonies, underscoring the strong bilateral ties between the two nations. The invitation was seen as a gesture of respect for India's role as a key regional partner.
Diplomatic Significance of India's Presence
India's decision to send high-level representation reflects its commitment to maintaining close relations with Iran. Margherita, who oversees India's diplomatic engagements in West Asia, will lead the delegation. Governor Hasnain, a former army officer with deep understanding of the region, adds strategic weight to the mission.
According to diplomatic sources, the two leaders will also hold brief meetings with Iranian officials on the sidelines to discuss bilateral cooperation, including trade and connectivity projects such as the Chabahar port.
Context of Khamenei's Passing
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who led Iran for over three decades, passed away on June 27 at the age of 87. His death has triggered a period of national mourning in Iran, with millions expected to attend the burial in Mashhad. The succession process is underway, with President Pezeshkian playing a key role in the transition.
India has historically maintained a balanced approach toward Iran, engaging in energy trade while also cooperating on regional security. The presence of a Union minister and a governor at the burial underscores India's respect for Iran's leadership and its desire for stability in the region.
The delegation is expected to return to India immediately after the ceremonies.
