Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Unveils Sweeping Cleanliness Initiative Ahead of 2030 Commonwealth Games
In a significant move to prepare for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced it is drafting a comprehensive cleanliness policy that will mandate housing societies, bungalows, and commercial establishments to take direct responsibility for maintaining the areas immediately surrounding their properties.
Municipal Commissioner Announces Policy at AmdavadNXT Exhibition
Municipal Commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani unveiled this initiative during a special session titled 'Getting Ready for the Games 2030', held on Saturday at the AmdavadNXT city mobility exhibition at Riverfront House. While the AMC currently provides door-to-door waste collection services, Pani emphasized that the burden of creating a cleaner city cannot rest solely on the civic body.
"We have just begun drafting a policy called 'Keep Your Front Yard and Backyard Clean', and it is in its infancy," Pani stated. "We follow a process, and it will be prepared after extensive consultations and by taking into confidence all stakeholders — citizens of this city, housing societies, and commercial establishments."
Policy Modeled on International Standards
The proposed policy will be modeled on standards observed in developed nations and is considered essential for improving Ahmedabad's overall air quality and environmental conditions. Pani stressed that "becoming Games-ready" requires a "virtuous partnership" between the government and citizens, highlighting the collaborative effort needed for success.
However, implementation is expected to be a gradual process. A senior AMC official involved in drafting the policy revealed that full implementation will "take at least three years," following a phased awareness campaign and multiple rounds of stakeholder consultations.
Implementation Timeline and Compliance Measures
The timeline from draft to full implementation is projected to extend approximately until the end of 2028. Before the policy takes effect, the AMC will establish a dedicated standard operating procedure and complete the consultation process. Only after these steps will the corporation move to mandate compliance.
Residents who fail to maintain clean frontages and backyards will face intervention from the corporation. "A fine structure will also be put in place, but that will happen after public consultation," the official noted, adding that the bylaw framework to support such fines already exists within municipal regulations.
International Precedents and Local Motivation
This approach mirrors practices in other parts of the world. In the United States, most municipalities legally require clean yards, vegetation upkeep, and trash removal to prevent unsafe or unsanitary conditions. European cities similarly enforce strict rules governing fencing, boundaries, and vegetation to maintain neighborhood aesthetics and prevent disputes.
Pani pointed to Ahmedabad's existing achievements as motivation for this initiative. "As the current cleanest city in India among large populations, the city's success depends on citizens contributing to solid and liquid waste management to create a world-class aesthetic for international visitors," he explained.
Strategic Planning for Global Recognition
The policy represents a strategic effort to elevate Ahmedabad's global standing ahead of the Commonwealth Games. By involving property owners directly in cleanliness maintenance, the AMC aims to foster a culture of shared responsibility and environmental stewardship.
This initiative aligns with broader goals of urban development and international event preparation, positioning Ahmedabad as a model city for sustainable waste management and civic engagement in India.
