Bengaluru Authorities Launch Urgent Search for Landfill Site Amid Waste Crisis
In a critical move to address Bengaluru's escalating waste management challenges, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has issued a public appeal for land acquisition. The city administration is seeking at least 100 acres of land within a 40-kilometer radius of Bengaluru, specifically adjacent to hillock areas, to establish a new landfill facility. This initiative comes as the city grapples with mounting pressure over its waste disposal infrastructure.
Cash Purchase Offer with No TDR, Full Compensation Under 2013 Act
DK Shivakumar has clarified the government's position on the acquisition process. "We are prepared to purchase the land outright and make payments in cash. No Transferable Development Rights (TDR) will be offered as part of this deal," he stated. He further emphasized that all compensation will be provided in strict accordance with the provisions of the 2013 Land Acquisition Act, ensuring fair treatment for landowners.
Preferred Locations Focus on Environmental Mitigation Near Hilly Areas
The deputy chief minister has identified several strategic corridors for potential landfill sites, highlighting areas that may minimize environmental disruption. He specifically mentioned land parcels along:
- Kolar Road
- Nelamangala
- Kanakapura
- Magadi
- Tumakuru Road
Shivakumar explained that locations near hilly and forested regions are particularly desirable, as they are likely to have a relatively lower environmental impact compared to other areas. This careful selection aims to balance waste management needs with ecological considerations.
Infrastructure Development and Proposal Submission Process Outlined
To facilitate the landfill project, the government has committed to developing necessary infrastructure with landowner consent. "With the agreement of landowners, we will construct approach roads suitable for tractors and compactors to ensure efficient waste transportation," Shivakumar assured.
He clarified that both farmers and developers are eligible to offer land for consideration. Interested parties are instructed to approach the GBA (likely referring to a government body or authority), which will be responsible for processing all proposals. A GBA meeting is scheduled to be convened shortly to review submissions and advance the acquisition process.
This urgent land search underscores Bengaluru's pressing need to modernize its waste management systems and develop sustainable solutions for the growing metropolis. The cash purchase offer and adherence to the 2013 Land Acquisition Act represent a structured approach to securing land while addressing environmental concerns through strategic site selection.
