Bengaluru's Stray Dog Adoption Drive Gains Momentum with Scientific Approach

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is witnessing a significant uptick in the adoption of stray canines across the city, driven by intensified welfare initiatives and a structured adoption program. This effort, implemented in coordination with Bengaluru's municipal corporations, has successfully placed numerous stray dogs into permanent homes in recent weeks, marking a positive shift in urban animal management.

Recent Success Stories Highlight Growing Trend

Officials cite a recent example where twenty street dogs under the jurisdiction of the Bengaluru North City Municipal Corporation were formally adopted by resident Sujaya Jagadish. Such cases are becoming increasingly common, reflecting a rise in public awareness about responsible pet ownership and humane population control methods. The adoption drive is conducted strictly in accordance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023.

Comprehensive Health Protocols Ensure Safety

Before being handed over to new owners, every dog undergoes a rigorous process including mandatory sterilization under the ABC program, anti-rabies vaccination (ARV), administration of combined vaccines, thorough health screening, and tagging for identification. A senior GBA animal husbandry official emphasized that this initiative is more than just an adoption drive; it is part of a scientific and humane urban animal management strategy.

"Our goal is to ensure public safety, prevent uncontrolled breeding, and promote animal welfare in a sustainable manner," the official stated. "Every dog given for adoption is sterilized, vaccinated, medically examined, and tagged to maintain accountability and care standards."

Community Participation as a Key Driver

The official highlighted that community participation is crucial for the long-term success of this initiative. "When citizens adopt Indian street dogs, they are contributing directly to population control humanely and reducing street conflicts," he noted. "Adoption is a responsible civic action that benefits both animals and neighborhoods, fostering a safer and more compassionate urban environment."

Ongoing Monitoring and Future Plans

During recent handover events, officials including the chief veterinary officer and staff from the animal husbandry department were present to oversee the process. Authorities have confirmed that follow-up monitoring mechanisms are in place to ensure adopted dogs receive proper food, shelter, and medical care post-adoption.

The GBA has indicated that adoption camps and ABC-ARV vaccination drives will continue across Bengaluru in the coming months. Interested citizens are encouraged to approach their respective municipal animal husbandry departments to register for adoption, contributing to this growing movement towards humane and effective stray dog management.
