BMC Proposes New Data Centre and Satellite Communication for Mumbai Disaster Management
BMC Plans Data Centre & Satellite Comms for Mumbai Disaster Response

BMC Unveils Major Infrastructure Upgrade for Mumbai's Disaster Management

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put forward a significant proposal to establish a state-of-the-art on-premises data centre and disaster recovery facility at the City Institute of Disaster Management in Parel. This strategic move is designed to substantially reinforce system reliability and ensure robust operational capabilities during critical emergencies across Mumbai.

Enhancing Data Security and System Resilience

The proposed infrastructure represents a cutting-edge technological advancement that will deliver enhanced data security, improved system resilience, and uninterrupted operations when facing disasters. By implementing this facility, the BMC aims to enable seamless and efficient decision-making processes precisely when they are most crucial for public safety and city management.

Addressing Communication Challenges with Satellite Technology

In a parallel development, the BMC disaster management department is actively exploring the implementation of a satellite-based communication system specifically for coordination during disasters and emergencies throughout Mumbai. This initiative comes as a direct response to the severe limitations of the current communication infrastructure.

Presently, the department faces significant operational constraints due to its reliance on MTNL landlines, approximately 90% of which are non-functional. This forces emergency responders to depend primarily on DMR radios or mobile phones for communication. However, during major disaster events or serious incidents within the city, mobile phone networks frequently become overwhelmed and clogged, while DMR radios often fail to provide coverage in certain locations, creating dangerous communication gaps.

As the nodal agency for disaster response, the department recognizes that these communication failures could severely hamper emergency operations. The proposed satellite-based communication system would establish uninterrupted and robust communication channels between the emergency operations centre and all other responding agencies, ensuring coordinated efforts even when terrestrial networks fail.

The combined implementation of the data centre facility and satellite communication system represents a comprehensive approach to strengthening Mumbai's disaster preparedness infrastructure. These technological upgrades will provide emergency responders with reliable tools and systems to better protect citizens and manage crises effectively.
