BRO Takes Charge of Tambakhani Tunnel Renovation in Uttarkashi
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has officially commenced the process to renovate the long-neglected Tambakhani tunnel in Uttarkashi district, a development that promises significant relief for local residents and travelers utilizing the crucial Gangotri National Highway. This initiative marks a pivotal step toward addressing years of deterioration and safety concerns surrounding the vital infrastructure.
Formal Proposal Submitted for Approval
BRO Commander Rajkishore A confirmed that a comprehensive renovation proposal has been forwarded to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways earlier this week. "Once the proposal receives approval, a thorough technical inspection will be conducted, followed by the preparation of a detailed project report," he stated, outlining the structured approach being taken to ensure the tunnel's restoration meets all necessary standards.
Historical Background and Construction Details
The 370-meter-long tunnel was originally constructed as part of the Varunavat package, with work beginning in 2006 and concluding in 2013. The irrigation department in Dehradun oversaw the project, which incurred an approximate cost of Rs 19 crore. Despite its completion, the tunnel was never formally handed over to any department for maintenance, leading to a prolonged period of neglect.
Deterioration and Safety Concerns
Over the years, the lack of maintenance has resulted in severe issues, including significant water seepage and structural deterioration, particularly during monsoon seasons. These problems have rendered the tunnel unsafe for commuters, exacerbating risks on the highway. The tunnel was initially built to mitigate accidents caused by falling rocks in the Tambakhani area, where several fatalities had occurred previously.
Transfer Process and Recent Developments
In 2021, then-District Magistrate Mayur Dixit initiated procedures to transfer the tunnel to the BRO's jurisdiction. After extensive formalities, the irrigation department finally handed over all relevant documents to the BRO in December of last year, paving the way for the current renovation efforts. This transfer is seen as a critical move to ensure proper upkeep and safety enhancements for the future.
Impact and Future Prospects
The renovation of the Tambakhani tunnel is expected to:
- Enhance safety for travelers on the Gangotri National Highway
- Reduce accident risks associated with falling rocks
- Improve overall infrastructure reliability in Uttarkashi district
- Boost local connectivity and economic activities
As the BRO moves forward with its plans, stakeholders are optimistic that this project will restore a key piece of infrastructure, ensuring safer and more efficient travel for all users.
