Central Vista Land Use Altered for Government Offices and Residences

The Government of India has officially changed the land use designation for approximately 101 acres within the Central Vista area in New Delhi. This significant alteration is aimed at facilitating the construction of new government offices and official residences. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs provided this detailed information in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

In addition to the land use changes, the ministry disclosed that a total of 2,994 trees have been either cut down or transplanted as part of the ongoing redevelopment efforts for the Central Vista project. This move has sparked discussions regarding environmental impact and urban planning in the national capital.

Detailed Breakdown of Land Use Changes

The ministry's reply outlined specific changes for seven distinct plots within the Central Vista precinct:

  1. Plot No-1 (15 acres on Church Road): Previously designated for "Transportation (bus terminal/parking), government (President Estate and Parliament House), and recreational (neighbourhood play area)" use, this land has now been reclassified as "residential." The Vice President’s Enclave has been constructed on this plot.
  2. Plot No-2 (9.5 acres opposite Parliament House): The land use has been shifted from "Recreational (district park)" to "Government (Parliament House)."
  3. Plot No-3 (7.7 acres south of Dr Rajendra Prasad Road and National Archives): Changed from "public and semi-public facilities" to "government office and recreational (district park)."
  4. Plot No-4 (24.7 acres south of Dr Rajendra Prasad Road and east of Janpath): Reclassified from "Public and semi-public facilities" to "government office."
  5. Plot No-5 (4.5 acres east of Maan Singh Road and south of Ashoka Road): Altered from "public and semi-public facilities" to "government office."
  6. Plot No-6 (24.7 acres north of Maulana Azad Road and east of Janpath): Modified from "public and semi-public facilities" to "government office and recreational (district park)."
  7. Plot No-7 (15 acres north of Dalhousie Road near South Block): Changed from "government office and recreational (neighbourhood play area)" to "residential." This plot is earmarked for the new Prime Minister's residence.

These comprehensive adjustments reflect a strategic shift in urban land allocation to accommodate the expanding needs of government infrastructure in the heart of Delhi. The Central Vista redevelopment project continues to be a focal point of national development and urban transformation initiatives.
