Chandigarh MC Ties Up with BSNL to Promote Parking Passes to 9 Lakh Vehicle Owners
Chandigarh MC, BSNL Join Hands for Parking Pass Drive

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has partnered with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to send text messages to approximately nine lakh vehicle owners registered in the city, urging them to opt for parking passes. The civic body aims to persuade vehicle owners to utilize the paid parking facilities available across its lots.

One Pass Valid for All Paid Parking Lots

Launched in January, the 'one pass' system is valid for all 75 paid parking lots under the MC's jurisdiction. This outreach initiative is designed to popularize the newly introduced facility and enhance the corporation's revenue.

According to sources within the MC, the corporation has obtained records of around nine lakh vehicles with Chandigarh registration numbers from the Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA). These registration numbers will be shared with BSNL officials. The MC has prepared the message content, which will be sent to BSNL after receiving approval from senior officers.

Cost and Public Response Assessment

Although final charges are yet to be decided, initial discussions with BSNL suggest that the civic body will have to pay between Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000 for the messaging service. Sources indicated that after sending the messages, the MC will assess public response. If the exercise proves effective, it may be repeated in a few months.

Recently, the MC's parking branch organized camps in collaboration with market welfare associations and other public groups to inform people about the passes. Such camps may be organized again, as many citizens are not tech-savvy and cannot obtain passes through online mode. Municipal councillors also raised this demand during the general house meeting earlier this month.

Discount on Annual Passes

The MC has approved a 10% discount on annual passes. Typically, the annual pass for a four-wheeler costs Rs 6,000, while for a two-wheeler, it is Rs 3,000. After the discount, the annual cost will be reduced to Rs 5,400 and Rs 2,700, respectively.

This initiative is part of the MC's broader efforts to streamline parking management and generate additional revenue for the city.
