Major Power Theft Crackdown in Chennai: 11 Cases Uncovered in Coordinated Raids
In a significant enforcement operation, the Chennai Enforcement Division of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO) has detected 11 cases of electricity theft during a division-level mass raid in the Avadi Division. The surprise inspections, which targeted multiple areas, were part of a coordinated effort to curb illegal power consumption that results in substantial financial losses for the state utility.
Multi-Circle Enforcement Teams Conduct Surprise Inspections
The raids were executed by enforcement squads from six different circles: Chennai Central, Chennai North, Chennai West, Chennai South, Chengalpet, and Kanchipuram. This coordinated approach allowed for comprehensive coverage and increased the effectiveness of the operation. Officials stated that the inspections were unannounced, catching offenders off guard and preventing any attempts to conceal illegal activities.
Substantial Financial Penalties Imposed on Offenders
As a result of the detected thefts, the power utility has imposed an extra levy amount of ₹8.77 lakh on the concerned consumers. This penalty serves as compensation for the financial loss incurred due to the stolen energy. According to enforcement officials, the consumers admitted to the offences and chose to compound their cases by remitting a total sum of ₹36,000 to avoid criminal proceedings and potential legal consequences.
The enforcement drive highlights the ongoing efforts by TANGEDCO to combat electricity theft, which remains a significant challenge for power distribution companies across India. Such theft not only causes revenue loss but also affects the quality and reliability of power supply for legitimate consumers.
Reporting Mechanism for Energy Theft Information
The Chennai Enforcement Division has provided a contact mechanism for citizens to report suspected cases of energy theft. Information can be shared with the executive engineer/enforcement, Chennai, through mobile number 9445857591. This initiative aims to encourage public participation in identifying and preventing power theft, which ultimately benefits all consumers through improved service and potentially lower tariffs.
This enforcement action comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen revenue collection and ensure fair distribution of electricity resources in Tamil Nadu. Similar raids are expected to continue across different divisions as the power corporation intensifies its campaign against illegal power consumption practices that undermine the state's energy infrastructure and financial stability.
