Lucknow Metro Grapples with Service Disruptions from Hazardous Kite Strings
The Lucknow Metro is facing significant operational challenges due to the use of dangerous Chinese manjha and metallic wires for kite flying. Repeated accidents have been reported along the critical stretch between the Amausi airport Metro station and Munshipulia, leading to frequent disruptions in train services and posing severe safety hazards.
High-Voltage Equipment Damage and Safety Concerns
Metro officials have highlighted that the metallic kite strings come into direct contact with the 25,000-volt overhead equipment (OHE) lines. This contact causes substantial damage to the traction systems, which are essential for powering the trains. The entanglement of these conductive threads with live wires not only disrupts services but also creates a serious safety risk for commuters, potentially leading to delays and hazardous situations.
Officials have issued stern warnings about the dangers of Chinese manjha, emphasizing its high conductivity. If these strings touch the high-voltage lines, they can cause instant electrocution, endangering not only those flying kites near the Metro corridor but also maintenance staff who work on the infrastructure. The risk extends to the general public, making this a critical public safety issue.
Legal Actions and Awareness Initiatives
The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has declared the use of Chinese manjha illegal and is taking strict legal measures against offenders. FIRs are being lodged against individuals found responsible for damaging Metro assets, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are addressing this problem.
In addition to legal actions, UPMRC has launched comprehensive awareness drives in residential colonies along the affected stretch. These initiatives aim to educate the public about the dangers of using metallic kite strings and encourage safer practices to prevent further incidents and ensure the smooth operation of the Metro system.
