Delhi Chief Minister Unveils Massive Rs 2,000 Crore Water and Sewage Infrastructure Initiative
In a significant move to address long-standing civic issues, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a series of high-value projects in the water and sewage sector on Wednesday. The comprehensive development plan, valued at more than Rs 2,000 crore, is spearheaded by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and aims to transform urban infrastructure.
Targeting Rajender Nagar's Persistent Problems
The newly launched projects include the laying of extensive new water pipelines, modern sewer lines, and the construction of advanced underground reservoirs. Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that these initiatives are specifically designed to resolve the chronic water and sanitation challenges faced by residents in the Rajender Nagar area, which have persisted for several years.
"For the first time, a government is utilizing public funds to genuinely meet the essential needs of our citizens," declared Gupta during the inauguration ceremony. She elaborated on her administration's relentless efforts, stating, "In nearly one year of our governance, we have tackled every problem confronting the people of Delhi. We have operated 24x7, 365 days without rest, driven by the immense expectations placed upon us."
Criticism of Previous Administrations
In a pointed critique, the Chief Minister contrasted her government's proactive approach with the inaction of previous regimes. She asserted that neither the 15-year Congress government nor the 11-year AAP government took adequate steps to address fundamental issues like access to clean drinking water and proper sewage systems.
Success of the LPSC Scheme and Its Expansion
Highlighting a key achievement, Gupta detailed the success of the DJB's Late Payment Surcharge (LPSC) scheme. Under this program, consumers receive waivers on late payment surcharges when they voluntarily settle their outstanding water bills. To date, 3,52,000 customers have benefited from the scheme, resulting in a waiver of Rs 1,400 crore by the DJB.
The Chief Minister announced an expansion of this initiative, revealing that the LPSC scheme will now be extended to the commercial category as well. Currently, the scheme allows consumers to pay only the principal amount of their bills, with the entire surcharge waived as a one-time relief measure until the end of August this year. This approach has proven highly effective, with the DJB collecting over Rs 400 crore in revenue through the scheme, demonstrating improved compliance and financial recovery.
This massive infrastructure push underscores the government's commitment to enhancing urban livability and addressing core civic amenities through strategic investments and innovative relief measures.
