India's Data Centre Capacity Surges Past 8.3 GW
India's data centre pipeline has crossed 8.3 gigawatts (GW), fueled by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), according to a new report. The country currently has 322.4 megawatts (MW) of data centre capacity under construction and another 2,920.2 MW in committed projects, the report stated.
AI as the Primary Growth Catalyst
The report highlights that AI workloads are the primary driver behind this expansion. As businesses increasingly deploy AI models for automation, analytics, and customer engagement, the demand for high-performance computing infrastructure has skyrocketed. This has led to a surge in data centre investments across major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Delhi-NCR.
Current Capacity and Future Projections
India's operational data centre capacity currently stands at approximately 1,200 MW, with the pipeline indicating a more than sixfold increase in the coming years. The 8.3 GW pipeline includes both under-construction and committed projects, with several hyperscale facilities planned by global and domestic players. The report noted that India is emerging as a key hub for data centres in the Asia-Pacific region, driven by favorable government policies, digital infrastructure growth, and cost advantages.
Government Initiatives and Industry Response
The Indian government has introduced policies to promote data centre development, including granting infrastructure status and offering tax incentives. States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh have also announced dedicated data centre parks. Industry experts believe that these measures will accelerate investments and help India capture a larger share of the global data centre market.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the growth, challenges remain, including high power costs, land acquisition issues, and the need for skilled talent. However, the report suggests that India's data centre sector is well-positioned to benefit from the AI boom, with the potential to become a major exporter of data centre services. According to the report, "India's data centre capacity expansion is critical to support the country's digital economy and AI ambitions."
