Delhi Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu Urges MCD to Strengthen Civic Operations

In a comprehensive review meeting held on Friday, Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu called for significant improvements across multiple civic sectors while engaging with officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Sandhu emphasized the necessity of strict enforcement, time-bound action, and enhanced service delivery to address urban challenges effectively.

Zero Tolerance for Delays and Accountability Measures

Regular monitoring and firm enforcement are essential to ensure accountability at all levels, Sandhu stated during the meeting. He reiterated the administration's zero-tolerance policy towards delays and assured full support in resolving operational hurdles. The goal is to foster a cleaner and more responsive city environment through proactive governance.

Key Directives for Urban Management

  • Action against encroachments: Officials were instructed to take firm measures against illegal encroachments in markets and on footpaths, ensuring penalty recovery to serve as a deterrent.
  • Solid Waste Management: Effective implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules was stressed, including proper installation and maintenance of dustbins in public spaces like markets.
  • Parking infrastructure: To ease congestion in major commercial hubs, Sandhu called for augmenting parking facilities to improve accessibility for residents and visitors.
  • Stray animal management: A structured approach was advocated, including the establishment of dog shelter homes in each zone to address public safety concerns.

Review of Ongoing Projects and Initiatives

The LG reviewed the status of key initiatives, ongoing projects, and priority areas requiring focused intervention. The meeting was attended by MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, highlighting the collaborative effort needed for urban development.

As the principal civic body, MCD plays a critical role in shaping the quality of life in the national capital, Sandhu remarked. He added that the corporation's functioning must reflect efficiency, accountability, and a citizen-first approach. Robust civic infrastructure, sanitation, and responsive urban services are central to the vision of Viksit Delhi, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broader vision of Viksit Bharat.

Sanitation and Infrastructure Upgrades

Sandhu also emphasized expediting legacy waste remediation and scaling up the deployment of mechanized road-sweeping machines to improve sanitation outcomes. He directed officials to:

  1. Expand the zero-waste colony campaign across all zones.
  2. Modernize crematoria to meet contemporary standards.
  3. Ensure timely maintenance of roads and streetlights for safe and seamless mobility.

Public Outreach and Grievance Redressal

Highlighting the importance of public engagement, Sandhu stated that prompt redressal of grievances, including those received through the LG Listening Post, must remain a top priority. He reviewed preparedness under the PM-UDAY scheme for regularization of unauthorized colonies and urged officials to proactively facilitate eligible beneficiaries.

MCD officials must remain aligned with ground realities and responsive to public feedback to bridge service delivery gaps, Sandhu concluded, underscoring the need for continuous improvement in civic administration.
