Gujarat Government Completes Revitalization of 70 Parks Under AMRUT 2.0

The Gujarat government has announced a significant milestone in its urban rejuvenation efforts, with the completion of revitalization work on 70 out of 131 previously barren parks across various municipalities in the state. This ambitious project, valued at Rs 117.56 crore, is being executed under the AMRUT 2.0 (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme, aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure and environmental sustainability.

Project Details and Implementation

According to an official statement released on Thursday, the initiative focuses on transforming neglected green spaces into vibrant community hubs. The project involves comprehensive redevelopment, including the preservation of existing trees and the planting of indigenous species to foster natural habitats. Work on the remaining 61 gardens is currently ongoing, with the government committed to completing all 131 parks to boost urban ecology.

Notable Examples of Revitalized Parks

Two standout examples highlight the project's impact:

  • Bhavani Garden in Lathi Municipality: Once barren and unused by residents, this garden has been transformed by preserving existing trees and planting indigenous species along walkways. This has created a natural habitat for migratory and local birds, enhancing biodiversity.
  • Kailasvatika Garden in Palanpur Municipality: Redeveloped over an area of 10,000 square metres, this park now features several amenities, including a children's play area with equipment, facilities for differently abled individuals, gazebos, and seating arrangements, making it a community-friendly space.

Environmental and Social Benefits

The redeveloped gardens are expected to deliver substantial environmental benefits, such as improving urban air quality and helping restore ecological balance in densely populated areas. By integrating local plants and trees, these green spaces are also playing a crucial role in preserving local biodiversity. The government emphasized that these efforts align with broader goals of sustainable urban development under AMRUT 2.0, contributing to healthier and more livable cities in Gujarat.
