The Coimbatore corporation has approved the construction of a new multi-sports turf on the Kumarasamy lake bund at a cost of Rs 60 lakh. This will be the second turf at the lake, aimed at providing more recreational space for young people.
Contract Awarded to NMS Engineers
During a recent corporation council meeting, the contract for constructing the turf was awarded to NMS Engineers. The decision is part of efforts to expand sports infrastructure in the city.
Criticism Over Privatisation of Existing Turf
However, the move has drawn criticism from CPI councillor C Shanthi and members of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF). They have opposed the corporation's decision to privatise the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the existing turf at the lake. According to them, private operators charge higher entry fees, making it unaffordable for many residents.
Shanthi, who represents ward 41, stated, “We welcome the move to establish more turfs. But the corporation should work on fixing a common entry fee to these turfs. Most of the private turfs cost more than Rs 2,000 for every two hours. The same should not be the case in corporation turfs. If the O&M is privatized, they will demand higher charges.”
Demand for Common Entry Fee and Monthly Passes
Shanthi suggested that the corporation appoint its own staff for maintenance and monitoring to keep fees low. She added, “Corporation school students should be provided monthly passes with a very minimal charge so that they can come in groups to play any sport, be it cricket or football.”
AIYF members have held several protests condemning the corporation for privatising the O&M of turfs. They argue that public amenities should remain accessible at nominal rates.
Impact on Youth Recreation
The new turf is expected to benefit young athletes and residents seeking affordable sports facilities. However, the ongoing debate over privatisation highlights concerns about equitable access. The corporation has yet to respond to the demand for a uniform fee structure.
