Gurgaon: Booth-level officers (BLOs) in Haryana, who previously worked only on weekdays, will now operate on weekends as well. Observing that working families in urban areas are often unavailable on weekdays, Haryana chief electoral officer (CEO) A Srinivas on Friday directed election officials to intensify door-to-door outreach during weekends under the special intensive revision (SIR-2026) campaign.
While reviewing the progress of the voter list revision exercise in Gurgaon, Srinivas said BLOs “should focus particularly on Saturdays and Sundays” to maximise voter contact and ensure wider participation in the campaign. “In an urban district like Gurgaon, a large number of working families remain away from home on weekdays. Therefore, BLOs should work with special focus on weekends so that the maximum number of people can be reached,” he said.
The CEO emphasised that resident welfare associations (RWAs), ward councillors, public representatives and social organisations should be actively involved in the campaign to improve outreach and public participation. Highlighting the importance of grassroots election staff, Srinivas said BLOs play the most critical role in ensuring the accuracy and updating of electoral rolls. He stressed that an accurate and updated electoral roll is the foundation of a strong democracy, and no eligible citizen should be deprived of getting enrolled in the voter list or correcting details during the revision process. Ensuring transparency, accuracy and citizen participation in the electoral process is the collective responsibility of all officials. The work must be carried out seriously at every level, he added.
Deputy commissioner-cum-district electoral officer Uttam Singh informed the CEO that the SIR campaign is being conducted actively across the district. He said BLOs and election officials are continuously working in the field, while helplines and assistance centres have also been set up to facilitate citizens.
Earlier in the day, Srinivas visited GMD Garden Society in the Badshapur assembly constituency to assess the ground-level implementation of the SIR-2026 campaign. During the visit, he inspected the door-to-door verification exercise being carried out by BLOs and reviewed the progress of voter outreach activities. The CEO interacted directly with BLOs and sought detailed information regarding the distribution of enumeration forms, voter contact, document verification and compilation of electoral data. He also enquired about the challenges being faced during the campaign and possible measures to address them.
Highlighting the importance of grassroots election staff, Srinivas said BLOs play the most critical role in ensuring the accuracy and updating of electoral rolls. The efforts of BLOs form the foundation of the success of this campaign, the CEO added, stating, “There is a need to work with greater intensity, especially in urban areas and multi-storey residential societies, so that the maximum number of people can be connected with the exercise.”
