Indore Authorities Launch Major Crackdown on Fire Safety Violations
In a decisive move to protect public safety, the district administration and Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) have initiated a rigorous crackdown on commercial properties that are violating fire safety norms across the city. This action comes as authorities prioritize citizen welfare, particularly during the high-risk summer months when fire hazards are more prevalent.
Joint Operation Seals Multiple Establishments
A coordinated joint operation, spearheaded by Juni Indore SDM Ghanshyam Dhangar, targeted buildings with incomplete or entirely absent fire safety systems. On Saturday, officials sealed several establishments, including JMC Hotel in Samrat Ashok Nagar, along with various shops, showrooms, a gym, and a library. This enforcement followed the expiration of a final warning period that had been granted to building owners to install functional fire safety equipment.
Alarming Findings from City-Wide Survey
The crackdown was preceded by an extensive city-wide survey conducted in high-footfall areas, which uncovered significant safety gaps. A total of 432 buildings were surveyed across all zones, revealing that 133 buildings had no fire safety systems whatsoever. Additionally, among 282 buildings with existing equipment, 50 systems were found to be non-functional. The survey also flagged several buildings for misusing basements, failing to adhere to sanctioned parking purposes.
Enforcement Actions and Official Statements
To date, authorities have served 101 notices to owners of non-compliant buildings, and the crackdown has already resulted in the sealing of 14 buildings within the last 48 hours. Collector Shivam Verma emphasized that the safety of citizens is paramount, especially during periods of elevated risk. The IMC has issued a strong appeal to all building owners, urging them to ensure their fire suppression systems are fully operational and to conduct regular emergency drills to facilitate swift responses during crises.
Key Points from the Crackdown:
- Joint operation led by district administration and IMC officials.

- 50 non-functional systems found in buildings with equipment.
