Indore's Ralamandal Flyover Partially Opens to Ease Traffic and Improve Safety

Traffic movement partially commenced on Monday on the newly constructed Ralamandal junction flyover on the Indore bypass, a critical infrastructure project aimed at addressing a notorious accident-prone area that recorded 11 deaths in 10 road accidents over the last three years. While finishing work remains in progress, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has opened a portion of the structure to ease the movement of commuters, marking a significant step toward enhanced urban mobility.

Immediate Benefits and Daily Impact

The partial opening of this flyover is expected to benefit more than one lakh vehicles daily, providing substantial relief to bypass travelers and improving connectivity for traffic moving from Indore city towards Tillor and Tincha, ultimately offering better access to Khandwa Road. This development comes as a welcome change for a junction that has long been plagued by congestion and safety concerns.

Project Details and Current Status

The six-lane flyover, measuring 800 meters in length, was constructed at a cost of Rs 40 crore. NHAI Indore division project director Praveen Yadav stated that three lanes on one side of the flyover opened on Monday for commuters traveling from Mumbai towards Agra. "NHAI is expected to complete all finishing work and fully open the flyover by May this year," Yadav emphasized. He added that separate load testing is scheduled for next week, with remaining aesthetic and structural finishing work to continue alongside active traffic.

Historical Context and Safety Concerns

The project, which began in January 2023, missed its original deadline of July 2024, becoming operational approximately one and a half years behind schedule. Before and during the construction phase, the Ralamandal junction was known for frequent traffic jams and accidents, with the absence of a flyover turning the area into a ‘black spot’. Several accidents were reported even during the construction period, highlighting the urgent need for this infrastructure.

According to Indore traffic department's official data, the Ralamandal junction reported two accidents each in 2023 and 2024, resulting in as many deaths, while in 2025, six accidents at this spot claimed seven lives. To address these safety issues, the road safety committee instructed the agency to construct a service road and expedite the remaining construction work on the flyover.

Additional Safety Measures and Future Projects

The committee also mandated the installation of road markings, cat's eyes (reflective studs), relevant signage and warning boards, along with proper lighting arrangements in the area to enhance visibility and prevent accidents. Meanwhile, work is progressing on a flyover and underpass at the MR-10 junction on the bypass. This 1.8-kilometer-long project consists of two separate structures—one in front of Best Price and the other in front of Phoenix Mall.

With slab casting nearly complete, officials expect the MR-10 junction flyover to be functional before the onset of this year's monsoon. Once completed, it is anticipated to significantly reduce congestion for traffic entering the city from the Dewas side towards Vijay Nagar, Nipania, Bombay Hospital, and Radisson Square, further improving Indore's traffic flow and safety standards.
