Karnataka Transport Minister Inaugurates New KSRTC Bus Stand in Shanivarasanthe
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy officially inaugurated the newly constructed Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus stand at Shanivarasanthe on Saturday. The event marked a significant development in the region's public transport infrastructure, with the facility built at a substantial cost of Rs 1 crore.
Bus Stand to be Named After Field Marshal KM Cariappa
During the inauguration ceremony, Minister Reddy announced a notable decision to name the bus stand after Field Marshal KM Cariappa, India's first Army Chief. Cariappa was born and brought up in Shanivarasanthe, making this naming a tribute to his legacy and local roots. The minister confirmed that cabinet approval will be sought to formalize this naming, highlighting the government's respect for national heroes.
Additional Infrastructure and Future Projects Announced
Reddy also revealed plans for further improvements to the bus stand, including a grant to lay concrete within its premises, enhancing safety and accessibility for passengers. Looking ahead, he announced that a new bus stand will be constructed at Kodlipet, demonstrating the government's ongoing commitment to expanding transport facilities in Kodagu district.
Highlighting Government Transport Initiatives and Achievements
The minister took the opportunity to underscore the state government's transport-related achievements and schemes. He highlighted the Shakti scheme, a guarantee initiative under which more than 670 crore women have travelled by bus, setting what he described as a remarkable record. Reddy also provided updates on KSRTC's operational strength:
- Recruitment of 10,000 new drivers and conductors to support expanded services.
- Increase in fleet size from 5,800 buses to 7,800 buses this year, with 2,000 new additions.
- Annual procurement of new buses to maintain and grow the fleet.
Reddy assured that the upcoming state budget will place greater emphasis on road connectivity and transport infrastructure, promising continued support for projects like additional bus facilities in Kodagu district.

The event was attended by several notable figures, including MLA Manthar Gowda, religious leader Sadashiva Swami, and Congress leader HS Chandramouli, reflecting broad community and political support for the new facility.
