Karnataka Sets Ambitious Goal to Eliminate Drugs by 2028
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced on Tuesday that the state government has set a target to achieve a drug-free status by 2028. Speaking at a gathering predominantly attended by students, he emphasized the importance of mental discipline and self-control in combating drug abuse.
'You must maintain control over your mind and body and never lose your mental balance,' Shivakumar told the audience. The event, held in Bengaluru, was part of a statewide awareness campaign against narcotics.
Government's Strategy and Student Engagement
The state government plans to intensify its crackdown on drug peddlers and expand rehabilitation facilities. Shivakumar urged students to act as ambassadors in their communities, reporting suspicious activities and supporting peers struggling with addiction.
According to officials, Karnataka has seen a rise in drug-related cases in recent years, prompting the government to adopt a zero-tolerance policy. The 2028 deadline aligns with broader national goals under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Impact and Next Steps
Shivakumar also announced the formation of a special task force to monitor progress and coordinate with educational institutions, law enforcement, and health departments. Regular drug testing in schools and colleges will be introduced, along with counseling services.
'This is not just a government initiative; it requires collective effort from families, teachers, and students,' he added. The state will allocate additional funds for awareness programs and treatment centers.
