Lucknow's Aliganj Road Widening Project to Ease Traffic Congestion
The Public Works Department (PWD) in Lucknow is set to launch a significant infrastructure project this week, targeting a notorious traffic bottleneck in the Aliganj area. The initiative involves widening a 250-meter stretch of road from Hanuman Temple to Neera Hospital, a move expected to bring substantial relief to daily commuters.
Project Details and Implementation
Officials have confirmed that the road will be expanded to a width of 10 meters, with an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore. PWD Executive Engineer Satyendra Nath stated, "The project will also include construction of a proper drainage system alongside the widened road. The stretch has long been a traffic bottleneck, and the widening, along with improved drainage, will help ensure smoother vehicular movement." To minimize disruption to traffic flow, construction activities will be strategically carried out during night hours.
Impact on Local Businesses and Encroachments
Approximately 70 shops and commercial establishments along the stretch are likely to be removed to facilitate the project. PWD engineers have already corresponded with the district administration regarding the removal of these encroachments. However, the clearance process remains uncertain, as a joint inspection is still pending to finalize the details.
Commuters' Perspectives and Benefits
Local residents and commuters have welcomed the project, highlighting its potential to reduce daily travel time and inconvenience. Anand Verma, a resident of Church Road, shared, "I often get stuck in traffic while crossing this stretch and am sometimes forced to take a longer route to reach Hazratganj." Similarly, Sudha Shukla, a homemaker, noted that congestion near Dandiya Bazar frequently delays school commutes, making road widening essential for smoother movement.
The project is anticipated to address long-standing issues of traffic bottlenecks, particularly during peak hours, by enhancing road capacity and infrastructure. With improved drainage and wider lanes, the Aliganj area is poised for better vehicular flow and reduced congestion, contributing to overall urban mobility in Lucknow.
