Lucknow Municipal Corporation Launches Ambitious Clean Ward Competition
The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has officially launched a citywide 'Clean Ward Competition,' marking the beginning of an intensive cleanliness drive that spans all 110 municipal wards. The initiative was inaugurated on Monday by Mayor Sushma Kharkwal at Vrindavan Yojana, with residents, corporators, and civic officials in attendance.
Competition Structure and Evaluation Parameters
Mayor Kharkwal emphasized that this campaign is crucial for enhancing Lucknow's national sanitation standing. The competition is scheduled to run from February 17 to 28, following a week of preparatory work. Each ward will be rigorously evaluated on 12 specific parameters designed to ensure measurable, grassroots-level improvements rather than mere symbolic compliance.
Municipal teams will conduct field inspections to assess wards based on the following criteria:
- Source segregation of waste at the household level
- Implementation of home and community composting systems
- Efficiency of door-to-door waste collection services
- Effective curbs on single-use plastic consumption
- Maintenance and cleanliness of public toilet facilities
- Regular cleaning of drains and sewer systems
- Organization of zero-waste community events
- Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) awareness activities
- Clearance of garbage vulnerable points throughout the ward
- Cleanliness of back lanes and secondary streets
- Establishment of Swachh Sarathi Clubs in educational institutions
- Active participation of environment promotion committees
Wards will receive scores for each parameter, with top performers being recognized and awarded for their achievements.
Strategic Goals and Leadership Commitment
"Lucknow currently ranks 3rd nationally in cleanliness, but our ultimate aim is to secure the top position," declared Mayor Kharkwal. "We are treating this campaign as a mission that requires the dedicated efforts of corporators, sanitation workers, and municipal officials working in unison."
The launch event was preceded by a cleanliness awareness rally that moved from Vrindavan Yojana Road to the main venue. Residents, youth volunteers, and sanitation staff participated enthusiastically, raising slogans and carrying placards to promote the cleanliness message throughout the community.
Comprehensive Participation and Oversight
Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar, along with senior civic officials and representatives from Lion Enviro Agency, attended the drive's inauguration. Their presence underscores the administrative commitment to ensuring the competition's success through proper oversight and resource allocation.
This initiative represents a significant step in Lucknow's ongoing efforts to transform its urban sanitation infrastructure and community hygiene practices. By engaging all stakeholders—from municipal authorities to individual residents—the Clean Ward Competition aims to create sustainable cleanliness habits that will benefit the city for years to come.
