Madurai's Mullaperiyar Water Project Expansion Enters Final Phase, Capacity Set to Reach 125 MLD

The ambitious Mullaperiyar drinking water project in Madurai is currently in its final phase of expansion, with authorities working diligently to increase its capacity from 90 million litres per day (MLD) to 125 MLD. This critical infrastructure upgrade, valued at Rs 1,295 crore, is projected to be fully operational by the end of March 2026, significantly enhancing water supply for households across the city.

Infrastructure Enhancement Through Additional Pipelines and Pumping Station

A senior official from the Madurai Corporation confirmed that while the existing project already meets the original contractual capacity, the expansion is essential to address current and future water demands in newly developed and underserved areas. "Currently, water distribution is managed through three main pumping stations, each handling approximately 30 MLD. To achieve the target of 125 MLD, we are constructing an additional pumping station that will be activated upon completion," the official stated.

The project's execution is divided into multiple packages to ensure precision in laying massive transmission mains and integrating advanced treatment facilities. The first package, which involved constructing the core infrastructure for the expansion, has already been completed. Packages 2 and 4 focus on laying large-diameter feeder lines and establishing water distribution hubs, with both slated for completion by the end of this month.

Fast-Tracking Remaining Packages to Meet Deadline

Packages 3 and 5 are dedicated to constructing additional pipelines in areas with low water supply. "Construction of these lines will commence once a comprehensive survey identifies the required locations and detailed maps are prepared for efficient placement," the official explained. These packages are being fast-tracked to align with the March 2026 deadline, ensuring timely delivery of enhanced water services.

To support this effort, the Madurai Corporation has allocated an additional Rs 71 lakh to a private construction management and supervision consultant. "These funds will cover administrative costs and employee salaries until March, ensuring technical teams remain on-site to verify quality and engineering standards for the final pipeline connections under package 5," a corporation official elaborated.

Future Considerations for Further Capacity Increase

In a forward-looking move, technical experts are exploring the possibility of raising the project's capacity from 125 MLD to 135 MLD. This potential upgrade aims to further bolster water supply for Madurai's residents, addressing long-term urban growth and sustainability needs. The expansion underscores the city's commitment to improving public infrastructure and ensuring reliable access to clean drinking water for all its inhabitants.
