New Delhi is taking concrete steps to tackle its persistent parking crisis. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has prepared detailed proposals for three new multilevel parking projects. These facilities are estimated to cost more than Rs 500 crore collectively. The proposals have now been submitted to the Delhi government for necessary approvals.
Three Key Locations Identified for Development
The first and largest project is planned at the old slaughterhouse site on Idgah Road in the City-Sadar Paharganj zone. This facility will feature a ground floor plus three upper levels. The estimated cost for this development stands at Rs 346 crore according to proposal details.
A second parking facility has been proposed for Rajendra Nagar. This project will include a basement, stilt parking, and three additional floors. The projected cost for this structure is approximately Rs 76.6 crore.
The third project is slated for Shastri Park in Karol Bagh. This facility will have a similar configuration to the Rajendra Nagar project. The estimated expenditure for this development is Rs 101.7 crore.
Addressing Delhi's Parking Challenges
An MCD official explained that parking remains one of Delhi's most significant civic challenges. Acute space constraints continue to hamper solutions. "We can construct as many parking facilities as required," the official stated, "but the availability of land is the real issue."
The official elaborated on the practical difficulties. "In many markets, there is simply no space nearby. Even when parking is created at a distance, people often refuse to park there and walk to the shops."
Identifying areas with high parking demand alongside available vacant land has become critical. Delhi's steadily rising vehicle population makes this careful site selection essential. The official emphasized that comprehensive detailed project reports will be prepared for each approved site. These reports will cover design specifications, capacity assessments, feasibility studies, and construction models.
Additional Parking Projects in the Pipeline
The official indicated that parking projects might expand to additional locations in coming months. Several specific sites have already been identified for potential development:
- Bank Street in Karol Bagh with capacity for 500 cars
- Punjabi Bagh Club Road with capacity for 276 cars
- Bharat Darshan Park in Punjabi Bagh with capacity for 188 cars
- Shastri Park in Karol Bagh with capacity for 577 cars
- Rajendra Nagar with capacity for 464 cars
- Pusa Lane with capacity for 381 cars
- Rani Bagh with capacity for 500 cars
Construction work on these facilities may begin soon pending necessary approvals.
Existing Parking Infrastructure and Recent Developments
MCD currently operates 419 surface parking lots and 30 multilevel facilities across Delhi. Recent construction projects have seen completion of several automated parking structures:
- A 136-car facility at DMRC's Hauz Khas plot
- A 246-car facility at Central Market in Lajpat Nagar
Several parking facilities have already opened to the public:
- Andheria Mor with capacity for 56 cars
- Amar Colony in Lajpat Nagar with capacity for 81 cars
- Near Nizamuddin Basti with capacity for 86 cars
- Gandhi Maidan in Chandni Chowk with capacity for 2,338 cars
- Qutub Road with capacity for 174 cars
- Nigam Bodh Ghat with capacity for 96 cars
Additional construction has been completed for a 225-car facility at Punjabi Bagh cremation ground and a 399-car facility at GK-I Market. Work continues on a 196-car parking structure at Fatehpuri Market near Red Fort.
The MCD's comprehensive approach aims to systematically address Delhi's parking shortages through strategic infrastructure development across multiple locations.
