MCD to Empanel Agencies for On-Site Waste Processing, Push Zero-Waste Colony Model
MCD to Empanel Agencies for On-Site Waste Processing

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to empanel agencies for on-site waste processing, aiming to tackle the city's growing solid waste problem. The initiative will focus on bulk waste generators and promote a zero-waste colony model, according to officials.

Plan Details and Implementation

The MCD will invite proposals from agencies specializing in waste processing technologies. These agencies will be responsible for setting up and operating on-site facilities at bulk generation points such as residential societies, markets, and institutions. The goal is to reduce the burden on landfills and encourage decentralized waste management.

Officials stated that the zero-waste colony model will involve segregation at source, composting, and recycling within the colony itself. This is expected to minimize waste transportation costs and environmental impact.

Targeting Bulk Generators

Bulk waste generators, including RWAs, hotels, and commercial complexes, will be required to manage their waste on-site. The MCD will provide technical support and monitor compliance. Non-compliance may lead to penalties under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.

“We are moving towards a sustainable model where waste is treated as a resource,” said a senior MCD official. “Empaneling agencies will ensure professional management and accountability.”

Expected Benefits and Challenges

If successful, the initiative could significantly reduce the 11,000 tonnes of waste Delhi generates daily, much of which currently ends up in landfills. However, challenges include ensuring community participation, funding, and technical expertise. The MCD plans to pilot the model in select areas before scaling up.
