Gaya: Magadh University's (MU) officiating Vice-Chancellor Dilip Kumar Kesari has requested permission from Governor-cum-Chancellor Syed Ata Hasnain to convene the annual senate meeting for the approval of the university budget for the financial year 2026-27.
Currently, the budget has not been passed by the senate, which serves as the university's apex decision-making body. According to the Bihar State Universities Act, 1976, the senate holds ultimate authority over the university's financial and academic matters.
This situation has arisen due to the absence of a regular Vice-Chancellor. Previously, the chancellor issued an order limiting the powers of officiating VCs, authorizing them only to handle routine tasks such as salary payments and daily operations.
Per the chancellor's order dated April 28, officiating VCs are not permitted to convene meetings of the senate, syndicate, academic council, selection committee, or promotion committee. The order further states that if extraordinary circumstances necessitate such meetings, the officiating VC must seek prior permission from the chancellor.
Kesari emphasized that the budget's passage is urgently needed for smooth financial management of the university. He stated that follow-up action will be taken once the chancellor grants permission. An advanced copy of the proposed budget has already been sent to the education department.
Before convening the senate meeting, meetings of important bodies such as the syndicate, academic council, and affiliation committee will be held as part of the larger exercise, he added.
Expressing concern over delays in budget passage and irregular salary payments, MU Teachers' Association President Sachin Mandilwar said that once the university reopens after summer vacation, he will convene a general body meeting to discuss these issues.
